Today, in response to the new revenue estimates for the 2010-11 fiscal year, Rick Snyder called on Lansing to immediately address structural reforms and released the fourth in a series of reform measures from his Top 10 Guiding Principles to Reinventing Michigan that addresses his plan to Fix Michigan’s Broken Government. In the plan, Rick lays out reforms that amount to approximately $2.4 billion in annual cost-savings and calls for a transparent website for citizens to view the state’s finances and performance.

“Based on revenue estimates and the expiration of federal stimulus funds, state government is going to need to find ways to trim the budget by about $1.6 billion for next year. We can’t afford to allow Lansing politicians to continue to use one-time fixes and tax hikes to avoid making structural reforms,” said Snyder. “It’s time for career politicians to ignore special interests and begin to make government more efficient and innovative. In my plan, I clearly lay out reforms, many of which have been proposed by a bipartisan Legislative Commission on Government Efficiency, that will amount to $2.4 billion in annual savings for state and local government over time. My plan for government efficiency will improve collaboration, increase competition, align total compensation with the private sector and promote best practices across the state.”

“In these tough economic times, government must become innovative and learn to do more with less. At the same time, Lansing needs to shed some light on the finances of the state so that citizens can see not only where their money is being spent, but exactly what results they’re getting from it. We should look to the state of Kentucky as an example, and create our own website, opendoor.mi.gov that will allow citizens to see how government is performing and hold politicians accountable,” continued Snyder. “As Governor, I will also make government more efficient and bring a 21st century performance-based budget process called ‘Value For Money’ budgeting that allows state government to prioritize and determine the most efficient and effective spending practices.”
