“The goal of protecting Michigan’s environment is to ensure that future generations can enjoy the same awe inspiring natural resources that we’re enjoying today and to support our economic recovery. This is not a partisan or political effort – it’s about the preservation of the fabric that makes our state great. It’s about protecting and enriching Michigan’s soul, as Governor Milliken once described it,” said Snyder. “The current administration is right to push the dialogue and must do everything it can to make possible a federal and regional solution to prevent the Asian Carp from becoming a devastating invasion that could irreparably harm the Great Lakes’ ecology and the industries that depend on it. This threat should serve as a reminder that we need a systematic and collaborative approach to handling emerging threats to our environment.”

“Michigan’s leaders must become more proactive than reactive in protecting the environment and restore Michigan as a national leader in providing innovative solutions to protect the environment. Public and private partnerships, as well as Michigan’s research universities and talented professionals, need to be heavily leveraged to help fund environmental safeguards, monitor the environment, identify potential threats and swiftly deal with incidents that occur,” continued Snyder. “Our state’s economy has always depended heavily on our natural resources. We must increase our efforts to support industries like agriculture, tourism, outdoor recreational activities and enable Michigan to be a world leader in green technology and renewable energy.”
