Ann Arbor businessman Rick Snyder, one of the five Republicans seeking to be Michigan's next governor, continued his series of economic town hall meetings in Novi Thursday, pitching a familiar message that government is broken and that it'll take a businessman and a lot of hard work to fix it.

Snyder's foray into Oakland County preceded the opening of his Oakland County campaign office Friday at Woodward Avenue and Square Lake Road in Bloomfield Township.

The former Gateway computers CEO who has been running a populist campaign in a GOP primary with "One Tough Nerd" advertising, spoke to about 50 people at the Double Tree hotel at lunch hour Thursday.

Along the way, he fielded questions about a bridge to Windsor, favoring a private sector approach, and the state income tax.

"This is about an effort to reinvent Michigan," Snyder said. "It's an effort that's going to require a lot of hard work, effort and participation from a lot of us, hopefully all of us, for the next few years."

He said the hard work starts Jan. 1, the beginning of the new term of the next governor.

"I only want to be the next governor if you're going to demand more out of the role," Snyder said.

Snyder spoke on some of his favorite topics — repealing the Michigan Business Tax, changing the state's regulatory climate, creating a "customer service" government and improving the state's educational system.

"It's not the role of government to create jobs," he said. "It's the role of government to create an environment where jobs can flourish."

He also declared state government in Lansing to be so broken that most state employees can state with certainty when their retirement dates will be.

"If I had a business where my employees could answer their retirement date faster than anything else, I'd feel like a failure," he said.

In Bloomfield Township, Snyder's new campaign office will be at 43249 Woodward Avenue in a shopping plaza.

The office will kick off its opening by serving hotdogs and refreshments from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. to supporters and volunteers.
